Erasmus Plus Training Programme: Empowering Malta's Tourism Leaders
The Malta Tourism Authority firmly believes that investing in people is the key to sustaining excellence in the tourism industry. In line with this vision, the MTA spearheaded a transformative Erasmus funded initiative aimed at strengthening leadership, digitalisation and innovation among professionals across Malta’s tourism sector.
This training initiative aligns with the Malta Tourism Strategy 2021–2030 by addressing key priorities such as digital skills development and innovation. It supports the national vision to recover, rethink, and revitalise the tourism sector, while reinforcing the MTA’s commitment to preparing industry professionals for a more competitive and sustainable future.
This exclusive technical professional training programme took place in Rome and brought together managers from accommodation providers, catering establishments, visitor attractions, destination management companies, and travel service operators. Over the course of an intensive one-week experience, participants immersed themselves in the future of tourism, exploring how digital tools, artificial intelligence, inclusivity, and sustainability are reshaping the industry.
The programme was delivered across two successful intakes in November 2024 and January 2025. A total of 30 professionals took part, each selected for their commitment to driving excellence and innovation within their respective fields. Highlights were shared across multiple media platforms.

Training sessions were dynamic and hands-on, with a strong emphasis on the practical use of AI tools like ChatGPT and other digital platforms to improve communication, create engaging content, and enhance operational efficiency. Discussions also explored the ethical use of emerging technologies and fostering inclusive team environments.
Through such initiatives, the MTA is actively shaping the future of Malta’s tourism industry by nurturing and empowering its human capital for long-term success in an increasingly competitive global landscape. The continued support and collaboration of key industry stakeholders remain essential to the success of this ongoing drive to strengthen and revitalise the tourism workforce.
To capture and share the essence of this initiative, the MTA developed a learning tool in the form of an engaging presentation, designed to broaden outreach by showcasing key outcomes and insights from the training. This presentation is made available on various platforms. The initiative reflects MTA’s commitment to capacity building and innovation while reinforcing Malta’s position at the forefront of a digitally empowered, resilient tourism economy.
