Eco-Certification Training

To assist hotels in meeting the requirements of the ECO certification scheme, the MTA organises annual training seminars on environmental best practice. These seminars also aim to provide information on the scheme to hotels who might be interested in becoming ECO certified, and to serve as a networking exercise among certified hotels, thereby facilitating the sharing of positive experiences in environmental management.

The MTA launched the GSTC criteria to the ECO Certified Hotels in December 2012. In 2013 the MTA commenced a series of sustainability management workshops to explain the new ECO certification criteria to the hotel management/staff targeting both technical and non-technical persons.

During May and June 2013 the MTA organised training sessions to explain further the new GSTC criteria to ECO-certified Hotels and to other hotels showing interest in such sessions. A minimum of 4 hours was allocated to the in-house training which was offered free of charge.

The most recent seminar took place on the 3rd December 2013 at the Hilton Malta. A number of interesting presentations were given by the industry together with presentations from the CEO of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, MEPA, Adi (our third party auditors) and the Malta Business Bureau. The Minister for Tourism, Hon Karmenu Vella presented 15 hotels with the ECO certification that is for the first time recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council as fully reflecting the GSTC criteria.
