Quality Development

The role of the Quality Development Unit within the Quality Assurance Directorate Is to develop initiatives that raises and promotes quality in the Maltese tourism industry.

The main responsibilities of the unit are the development and management of quality and recognition schemes for different sectors of tourism.

The STAR (Special Thanks And Recognition) Awards

The STAR Awards are a prestigious annual event through which the Malta Tourism Authority is able to give public recognition to individuals working in contact with tourists who offer outstanding service and hospitality. The STAR Awards also include the STAR Product Awards, as well as a staff-driven award called the Hotel Worker of the Year.

The Eco-certification scheme

This voluntary scheme was introduced in 2002 and is based on a detailed set of criteria covering environmental management, waste management, energy, water, green procurement and environmental training among others.

The Quality Assured seal for Destination Management Companies

This quality scheme was launched in 2008 and aims to recognise those DMCs committed to high levels of quality and professionalism. Participation is on a voluntary basis.

Other projects

The unit is also involved in several other projects, mainly projects related to quality in hotels. The unit is also involved in tourism projects co-funded by the European Social Fund.
