25-04-2016 GROWTH IN ARRIVALS AND NIGHTS RECORDED IN COLLECTIVE ACCOMMODATION FOR FEBRUARY AND JAN-FEB 2016

The collective accommodation statistics published today by the National Statistics Office, for the month of February, show an increase of 4.5% in both arrivals and night spent. The average length of stay for February remained constant at 5.1 nights. A positive performance in both arrivals and nights spent was recorded by all accommodation categories. Compared to Malta, total accommodation in Gozo registered a better performance with double-digit growth rates in both arrivals (+13.0%) and nights (+10.3%). In Malta the highest percentage increase in arrivals were registered by lower-category type of accommodation whilst in Gozo increases were registered by 5 star and 3 star hotels.

Positive results were registered for the period January to February 2016, with total arrivals and nights in collective accommodation estimated at 168,756 and 898,039 respectively; this is equivalent to an increase of 3.0% in arrivals and 2.8% in nights spent. The best performers both for Malta and Gozo were five and three star accommodation establishments. The percentage increases in total arrivals (+21.7%) and nights (+16.9%) registered in Gozo were stronger than Malta.

These positive results clearly indicate that the Malta Tourism Authority’s marketing efforts to increase the number of visitors in the winter season are reaping fruit. These results encourage the MTA to continue to increase its efforts to reduce seasonality and make the local tourism industry a more sustainable one.
