Cruise

Statistics published today indicate that the number of cruise passengers almost doubled during the first quarter of 2016 when compared to the same period last year.

Total cruise passenger traffic during January to March 2016 amounted to 39,375; 18,722 more passengers or +90.7% when compared to the first three months of 2015. A total of 17 cruise liners called at the port, 8 more calls than last year, on average carrying 2,316 passengers each.

The positive performance is attributed to substantial increase in passengers residing in both the EU and non-EU countries, with the latter showing a threefold increase.

All featured countries registered growth, with the highest absolute increases recorded from the United States (+2,716), followed by the United Kingdom (+2,312), Italy (+1,793), France (1,563) and Germany (1,181).

Increases were registered across all the different age groups with the highest percentage increase recorded in 20-39 age group.

The Malta Tourism Authority is highly satisfied with the results achieved in the first quarter of the year. It is also pleased that this success of the port and Malta as a destination is being recognised internationally with the Valletta Cruise Port having recently been awarded prestigious titles such as the ‘Best Mediterranean Port & Destination’ and the ‘Best Terminal Operator 2015’.
