Statistics on the performance of collective accommodation establishments published today by the National Statistics Office show a 4.7% increase in arrivals using hotels and similar establishments during the month of December 2015. For the cumulative period January to December 2015, the figure increased by 2.2% or 34,468.

Total nights spent in collective accommodation during December 2015 were estimated at 440,391; this is equivalent to an increase of 2.7% or 11,589 nights. The average length of stay registered a marginal decline from 4.8 nights in 2014 to 4.7 nights in 2015.

Overall performance for Gozo’s collective accommodation in December 2015 was stronger than that of Malta. Gozo registered a double digit growth of 10.3% in nights and an increase of 7.7% in arrivals. Five, four and three star hotels in Gozo registered increases in both arrivals and nights.

Quarter 4 performance for hotels and similar establishments was also positive, recording increases of 4.0% in arrivals and 4.1% in nights. Whilst the increase in arrivals was mainly generated by non-residents, the growth registered in nights came from both non-residents and residents.

Arrivals, guest nights and net occupancy rate figures in collective accommodation for the period January to December 2015 show a better performance compared to same period last year. Total arrivals estimated at 1,586,015 increased by 2.2%, while total guest nights at 8,915,144 were up by 1.8%. Most hotel categories registered increases in occupancy rates.

The Malta Tourism Authority is pleased with the positive results recorded by collective accommodation establishments during 2015, particularly with the higher growth rates in nights spent recorded in Gozo during the lean months of October to December.
