Tourism contributed LM 109 million (Euro 265 million) to Government in 1998. For every Maltese lira spent by tourists, 34 cents go to Government funds. In the year 1998, the direct impact share from tourism to the national economy was 10.45%. The full effect of tourism on the Gross National Product is 24.3%. The Gross earnings from tourism for the same year were LM 217.64 million.
Tourism has a positive impact on employment in the country. 27% of full-time equivalent employed in Malta is supported by tourism expenditure. This amounts to around 41,000 jobs.

Tourism accounts for 24.3% of Gross National Product and over 25% of exports of goods and services.
3. What is the intensity of tourists from abroad (overnight stays per 1000 inhabitants) in Malta?
The tourist density is 100 per square kilometer. The population density (density of locals) is 1200 per square kilometer. The total density is 1300 per square kilometer. Every 100,000 guestnights increase the total density by 0.87 per square kilometer.
