1.      What importance has tourism for the labor market in Malta?

 

Earnings generated from tourism are re-spent in a variety of goods and services.  This implies that more labor services are required generating more employment termed as induced employment.  For this reason tourism supports 27% of the total employment in Malta amounting to more than 41,000 jobs.

 

2.      What is the proportion of the people working in tourism in Malta with regard to the total number of the people employed?

 

Tourism supports 27% of the total employment in Malta amounting to more than 41,000 jobs.  In March  2003 total number of persons employed amounted to 148,798.

 

3.      What is the number of people trained in tourism in Malta?

 

The official number of students who graduated from the Institute of Tourism Studies, from 1990 to 2002, amounts to 1,112.

 

Apart from this, various tourism establishments provide training to employees during employment.  Following the Employment and Training Survey (2001),

÷     78% of accommodation establishments

÷     69% of catering establishments

÷    76% of travel agencies/destination management companies provide training during employment to employees.
