10 August 2005 - TOURISTS UNDETERRED BY TERROR THREATS

The recent attacks in Sharm el-Sheikh are expected to have only a short-lived effect on tourism flows to this Egyptian destination, in keeping with a change in the market’s attitude toward the threat of terrorism over the past few years, a development that has made tourism more resilient, according to the latest report by the Market Intelligence Department of the World Tourism Organization (WTO).  Read more

2 February 2005 - International tourism obtains its best results in 20 years - WTO

After three years of stagnant growth, international tourism experienced a spectacular rebound in 2004. According to WTO World Tourism Barometer, presented to the media at a news conference in Bangkok, Thailand, international tourist arrivals reached an all-time record of 760 million - an increase of 10% over 2003.  Read more.

After being beaten up on all fronts, the airlines are starting to take it out on their computers.

In a move that is expected to save the carriers millions of dollars annually, some airlines have begun to persuade travel agents to shift to Web-based services from the mainframe systems they have used for 30 years. Earlier this month, United Airlines, which is a unit of the UAL, met with its top travel agents in Chicago to introduce them to three Internet-based reservation systems from ITA Software, G2 SwitchWorks and Farelogix that rely on Web connections and desktop computer technology to search and book seats. These systems cost airlines about $1 for every ticket booked, compared with more than $10 for current booking systems.  Read more by visiting the Travel Trade News website.

2004 to close with 70 million more international arrivals - WTO.

London, United Kingdom, 8 November 2004 - With still a couple of months to go, it is already clear that 2004 will go into history as a very strong year for tourism. WTO Deputy Secretary General Dr. Dawid de Villiers said today at the World Travel Market that according to an initial projection, the number of international tourist arrivals is heading for a new all-time record, as growth for the entire year is estimated to reach around 10%.  Read the article from the WTO website.

The Tsunami will not sink world tourism - WTO.

Statment issued on the 7 January 2005 from the World Tourism Organization (WTO) stated that the recent earthquake and tsunami disaster in Indian Ocean will have only a limited impact on world tourism.
