What are the main direct European funding opportunities which exist in the area of tourism and from non-governmental organisations (NGOs), associations and the private sector can benefit?
There are several areas of European funding available directly from the respective Directorate-General within the European Commission. The following are the main areas of direct relevance to tourism.
ENERGY - there is a potential of utilizing funding assistance for initiatives in the tourism sector which have an impact on reduction of energy consumption under DG TREN (Transport and Energy). The Sixth Framework Programme can assist private initiative efforts in the area of energy on the investment side. LIFE Programme - Initiatives which are environmentally related and which lead
towards sustainable development are eligible for funding under the LIFE
(Environment strand) programme, which falls under DG ENVIRONMENT. Eligible
actions can be initiatives in line with the environmental issues highlighted
in the Carrying Capacity (waste, water, electricity, etc), but also private
sector/NGO initiatives. (http://europa.eu.int/comm/environment/life/home.htm)
LEONARDO DA VINCI Programme - There is potential here for NGOs, associations and the private sector to apply for projects aimed at Human Resources Development of their organisation. National Co-ordination of the Leonardo Programme: European Union programmes Unit, Ministry for Education http://www.leonardomalta.com/index.asp
CULTURE 2000 - This programme, which was originally intended to span
2000-2004, will now be extended by two years until 2006, giving further
possibilities for assisting culture-related projects with benefits to the
tourism sector. (Locally co-ordinated by Mr. Ian Paul Bajada at MOED
